Stone Grinding… What is it?

Have you heard of Stone Grinding before?

If your skis are a few years old, they are likely sporting a few undulations, burns, and damage that is expected to happen to a well-loved pair of skis. These blemishes, however, can affect the performance of your skis. Stone Grinding skis are a remedy to this problem.

Stone Grinding is the process of using a stone to “grind” a pattern into the base of a ski. This works on classic Nordic skis, cross-country skis and skate skis alike. This method is lengthy but has been determined by world-class skiers that it creates a faster ski and more effective worn-out

The Process

The process involves the flattening, polishing, and structuring of the ski and can take up to 1 hour for one pair of skis. We initially start with a coarse pattern to pre-work the ski, this can be done by machine or hand. The next step is to

buff and polish the ski to ensure the flattest and most linear pattern. These steps are often repeated to layer a pattern over a pattern for a compound structure.

Choosing the best base structure will be most important. Luckily our knowledgeable team can help determine the right pattern for you.

The Benefits

Stone Grinding your skis is the best process to bring new life to loved but worn-out skis. Some of the benefits include faster and more stable skis that can handle the terrain and type of skiing you want. You will also be expected to see fewer side slips and smoother transitions to the edges of your skis while being able to track your skis straighter at the same time. If you have burned your skis, it is often harder to wax them evenly and efficiently. With a stone grinding, you can buff out this damage and ensure the best wax absorption.
